Why War is not an Answer

WHY WAR IS NOT AN ANSWER

The American war in Iraq has created a lot of debate both among Americans and among other nations that are mere witnesses to it. Although some people are in favor of the war and bring to the debate table many pro war arguments, there also are some people who disagree with the American government’s decision. I am one of those people and the main reason why I think that the war is not the answer to the situation in Iraq is the fact that I see this as something that could be solved in a diplomatic way that would not only spare many war casualties, but would also avoid a negative impact on the American economy.
Those who support the war in Iraq are mainly concerned with the fact that Saddam Hussein represents a threat to the stability of the Middle East. They also argue that he is a supporter of terrorists and that he might supply them with weapons of mass destructio (balancedpolitics.org). Even though the argument that the people who are in favor of the war present is a strong one, the cons of such a war are even stronger. The many casulaties that a war in Iraq would inevitably cause need to be taken into serious connsideration and they need to be avoided at all costs. The war in Iraq is supposed to represent a solution to the situation there, not a massacre on its people. And besides, such an action seems to be against what the United States stands for as far as its foreign politics goes. And nonetheless, Saddam is dead and no weapons of mass destruction were ever found, so why continue engaging in a war that in my opinion makes no sense?
My other argument against the war in Iraq is that it would have a negative financial impact on the American economy. The cost of a war such as the one in Iraq could take a toll on any economy, even more on an economy such as the American one, which has been declining in the past few years. There are so many other things that can be done with the money used for a war to prevent that war. Diplomatic efforts should be the fisrt thing that a political leader like Bush should think about before even pronouncing the word war.
The war in Iraq might be the answer for some of us, but have we considered the long-term consequences that such a war would have? The supporters of the war, usually think only in the moment, and they see the situation as having to be solved right now. Their point is valid, but the many repercusions of a war, not only on Iraq, but on the American economy and the American population as well, have to also be taken into consideration.
